Advent 2010 : Day 1

I found 25 Days of Christmas on About.com. I know - random, right? Well, I thought I would post them each day until Christmas. They give a verse, a thought, shows that are on tv about Christmas, recipes and more.

Day 1
"Therefore be imitators of God as dear children."
Ephesians 5:1 (New King James Version)

If we are to be imitators of God then we need to remember to keep our heads and our hearts this Christmas season. Can you imagine our Lord running around Heaven like a chicken with its head cut off simply because he looked at the calendar and saw that the countdown is on? Do you believe that he would ever get into an argument with someone over the last item on sale at the store? Can you picture God looking over a list of friends/family and saying "Oh no, I'm not inviting so-and-so to the Christmas party this year because she forgot to send a card to me on my birthday!"
Keeping Christ in Christmas is more than just remembering to say "Merry Christmas" instead of the generic "Happy Holidays." Keeping Christ in Christmas means being an example of His love and His grace, even when we really want that last blue sweater that's on sale for 25% off and someone else puts their hands on it first.

Christian Musical Gift Idea of the Day

The Generous Mr. Lovewell
- MercyMe
(Lindsay here. Totally agree with this. It's an awesome album.)
If you want to give someone some spiritual encouragement that comes straight from the heart and shoots straight from the hip, this album is a wonderful way to do it.

Family Movie of the Day

A Charlie Brown Christmas
(Compare Prices)
Charlie Brown isn't caught up in the madness of Christmas and all of the commercial trimmings that are infecting those around him. In this classic, he fights to keep the real meaning of the Christmas in his heart, always remembering the "reason for the season."

Christmas Gift Idea

A gift for someone who has everything...

We all know that one person who seems to have everything. Shopping for them seems to be an exercise in futility and leaves us scratching our heads in confusion. For those folks in my own life, a gift to a charity in their name is always a sure-fire gift. Our Guide to Nonprofit Charitable Orgs, Joanne Fritz, shared a charity some time ago that really struck a chord with me so this year, AfricAid is my charity of choice. Giving the gift of education to girls will be a wonderful Christmas gift!

Recipe of the Day

December 1st kicks off the 25 Days of Christmas and since it's Wednesday, instead of serving a full meal at church, everyone is bringing their favorite appetizers. Normally, my girls won't touch a chickpea with a ten-foot pole, but I've found that tossing a can in the food processor with some sun-dried tomatoes and serving it with pita chips is a way to make them come running.

  1. I watched Scrooged on dvd this past weekend. Forgot how funny and light that movie is. Great for kicking off the holiday season.
